Calf, Sheep, Chicks, and Goats, Oh My!

The children have all begun their 4H projects now, Cassidy’s calf and Brennan’s chicks all arrived on the same day. So, here in Windy Woods we now have a calf, sheep, chicks, laying hens and goats. I’ve avoided talking about their projects because I want them to be able to post about them, and me […]

Lost the Garden

Well, it’s official, we’ve completely lost the entire garden.  I’m going to classify this entire experience as a hard lesson learned. I think we’ve also lost our entire apple and pear crop for this year too. Last week we had 3 days in a row of sub-freezing temperatures overnight.  This killed everything in the garden, […]

Dairy Goats and Bramble

May 21, 2015

I’m feeling a bit guilty this morning, my dairy goats’ udders have scratches all over them. I don’t recall there ever being an issue last year, but I suppose it’s possible that the areas we had previously penned them weren’t as overgrown with blackberry bramble. It seems kind of counter to our goal of using […]

A Quick 4-H Update

Last Saturday (5/16/15) there was a 4-H work bee at the Fair grounds. My club (Country Critter Ranchers) was assigned to painting da da DUM fence posts! First, we scraped the paint off the posts with a wire brush.  After that we painted the posts white. We did the same thing on the second arena. […]

Putting in the Garden

The garden is in! Well, a good part of it is. We might be taking a bit of a risk, actually, I’m certain we are taking a bit of a risk, but the warm weather over the last few weeks, combined with the really short growing season up north says do it!

Taking the Goats to the Barn for Milking

May 7, 2015

Just a quick post tonight to put up short video of the nightly running of the goats to the barn for milking. I was hoping for a little more of the kids kicking up their heels, but there was a little of that. You may notice, there’s a sheep in the mix.  That is Asher’s […]

What Are Little Girls Made of? Star Trek and 4-H

Let’s start the very beginning….introductions! My name is Cassidy, and, as you all know I live at the Windy Woods farm. At 13, I’m the eldest child of the kids (no, not the goat kids!). My hobbies are reading, writing, and drawing manga, Star Trek (we’re currently watching the original series), kite flying (that is until until a tree ate it. Thank […]

The Kids Have Been Named

May 5, 2015

It was a quiet weekend in Windy Woods, the elder children were all off at a 4H event all day Saturday, leaving me with just Honor and Corwin. We had a good time cleaning out the temporary pen that I had put into the pole barn. This was basically the first hoop coop that I […]

The Trees are Starting to Bloom

Spring is really in the air here in Windy Woods, the trees are starting to bloom.  Now comes the time to worry and fret, as it’s still possible to get a hard freeze. The pear tree doesn’t look like it’s quite ready to open yet, but it’s getting there.
